The Solar/Grid Powered Water Pumping System
One of the RE Systems being promoted by SIBAT is the Solar/Grid Water Pumping System (SWPS). It is a hybrid system that uses 800-watt to 1200-watt solar panels with a back- up source from the grid (if solar power is not available) to operate a submersible water pump with a controller. This system size up is matched with the daily water demand of the community and is designed to pump the water from the suitable well source to an elevated storage tank, to be delivered to the community through a distribution pipeline connected to the communal tapstands.
The well needs to be developed and well maintained to ensure the quantity and quality of water produced. The communal tapstands are outlets built in locations that are accessible to the houses. This is called level 2 distribution system.
The solar powered water pump is a reliable system which can be easily managed by the community including the women. It is called a Community-based Water Distribution System . The community gets to own, manage and sustain the system by developing certain policies on utilization, tariff payments and maintenance. Its function and operation can be easily understood, and thus a level of self-reliance in maintaining the system can be acquired.
The following is a list of SIBAT water solar water system projects installed.
